Strengthening National Data Infrastructure

AFMC is the definitive source of information on the training of physicians in Canada. This year, the automation of key operational processes significantly improved our reporting timelines and strengthened confidence in the national data.

A major milestone in advancing this data infrastructure was the integration of Toronto Metropolitan University, the first new medical school added in more than 15 years. With all 19 Canadian medical schools now represented, AFMC provides a more comprehensive view of medical education across the country.

As our data grows, so does its value to the academic medicine community and decision-makers. The AFMC Admissions Guide remains a trusted resource for aspiring medical students, while a new resident-focused survey will soon provide direct insights into the postgraduate experience. AFMC also brought its data and expertise to national priorities, contributing to the Medical Council of Canada’s International Medical Graduate Working Group and providing evidence to the House of Commons Standing Committee on Health to inform discussions on immigration policy, health workforce planning and pathways for internationally trained health professionals.

Know the Facts: Countering Misconceptions with Reliable Evidence

AFMC launched Know the Facts to address common misconceptions about medical education, physician training and health care in Canada. Grounded in trusted data and AFMC’s expertise, the initiative helps the public, media and decision-makers navigate complex issues ranging from residency training and family medicine to internationally trained physicians, rural practice, health research and planetary health. By bringing reliable evidence to public and policy discussions, Know the Facts supports a more informed national understanding of the issues shaping the future of health care in Canada.

AFMC continues to advance health human resources priorities through two committees focused on long-term planning and stronger national coordination:

  • Comité permanent sur la planification de la main-d'œuvre en santé – developing strategies with a focus on primary, rural and remote care and the long-term sustainability of Canada’s physician workforce.
  • Comité ad hoc sur les stagiaires parrainés – creating a more consistent and transparent framework to support sponsored trainees and institutions.

Through these committees, AFMC is helping ensure that physician training is aligned with the evolving needs of patients, communities and the health system.

Informing Canada’s Health Policy Priorities

AFMC advanced federal policy recommendations to strengthen Canada’s health system, with a focus on medical education capacity, health research and innovation. Through pre-budget submissions, public statements and targeted proposals, AFMC brought the priorities of academic medicine to national policy discussions.

As part of this work, AFMC contributed to discussions on artificial intelligence in health care, advocating for approaches that support innovation while safeguarding public trust, privacy and patient safety.

Recognizing that stronger health systems begin with strong training environments, AFMC convened leaders in medical education, family medicine and rural health care to develop a proposal to expand teaching and learning infrastructure. The proposal aims to increase physician training capacity and help communities build the workforce they need.

Bridging the Gap between Government and Academic Medicine

Throughout the year, AFMC expanded opportunities for Canada’s academic medicine community to engage directly with federal decision-makers and health system partners.

This engagement included ongoing discussions with Health Canada, Infrastructure Canada, Innovation Canada and members of the Senate. In the lead-up to ICAM 2026, AFMC and Senator Stan Kutcher co-hosted an advocacy breakfast at the Senate of Canada, bringing together Canada’s 19 medical school deans and 13 senators to discuss the school’s contributions to innovation, health workforce planning and Canada’s broader health and economic priorities.

AFMC further extended its reach through the HEAL Coalition, working alongside leading national health organizations to advance shared priorities and bring a stronger collective voice to issues affecting the health of Canadians.
